St. John the Baptist (January 20)
John the Baptist was an ascetic Jewish preacher from the 1st century, who performed a ritual bath in the river Jordan.
John the Baptist called on people to repent and turn to God. He was an important religious personality of the 1st century, whose movement was probably more massive than Jesus. He is best known for baptizing Jesus, who accepted his message. Some of the essential elements of John's movement, such as fasting and baptism, probably entered early Christianity under the influence of John's disciples.
In Christianity, he is honored as a saint, a hermit and a martyr, the predecessor of Jesus.
